The judge looks down, his face shadowed by the heavy wooden bench. The courtroom falls into a heavy silence. No one dares to breathe as the 15-year-old boy clutches his little brother tighter, the seven-year-old's small hands gripping his shirt.

"I don't have parents..." the boy's voice cracks again, echoing through the tall ceilings. "We only have each other. Please... don't take him away from me."

The judge's eyes soften for just a moment. He adjusts his glasses, but his hand trembles slightly. Papers shuffle on his desk, yet he doesn't seem to read them. The air feels thick with unspoken pain.

From the back rows, a few spectators wipe their eyes. A bailiff stands motionless, staring at the floor. The little boy looks up at his brother, confused but trusting, whispering something only they can hear.

The judge clears his throat. "Young man," he begins, his voice low and measured. "This court has heard many stories. But yours..." He pauses, glancing at the empty seats where family should have been.

The teenager straightens up, still holding his brother close. Tears stream down his cheeks, but he refuses to let go. "We sleep in the same bed every night so he doesn't get scared," he adds quietly. "I make sure he eats first. I walk him to school. He's all I have left."

The judge leans forward, resting his chin on his folded hands. For what feels like minutes, he says nothing. The clock on the wall ticks loudly. Outside the windows, distant city sounds fade into nothing.

Finally, the judge speaks again. "There are rules. Procedures. Systems designed to protect children like you both." His tone carries the weight of years on the bench. "But rules don't always see the love in front of them."

He looks directly at the two boys now. The younger one peeks out from behind his brother's arm, his eyes wide and innocent. Something shifts in the judge's expression - a flicker of memory, perhaps his own past or a case long forgotten.

The boy continues, his words pouring out faster. "I'll work harder. I'll get a job after school. Just let us stay together. I promise I'll take care of him." His voice breaks completely on the last words.

The little brother tugs at his sleeve. "Don't cry," he says softly, loud enough for the front rows to hear. A few more people in the gallery sniffle openly.

The judge sits back in his chair. His face remains stern, but his eyes betray the internal struggle. He reaches for his gavel, holding it but not striking it yet. The entire room waits, hanging on what comes next.

Outside, the sun begins to dip lower, casting long shadows across the polished wooden floors. The boys stand there, united against whatever decision hangs in the balance. The judge's lips part slightly, as if about to deliver the ruling that could change their lives forever...
