The boy stood frozen, his small arms wrapped protectively around his baby sister whose cries echoed through the warm, buttery air.

Golden croissants glistened under the lights. Fresh baguettes lined the shelves like soldiers. The scent of vanilla and chocolate hung heavy, making his empty stomach twist painfully.

A well-dressed woman at the counter turned, her designer bag swinging. She paused, eyes widening at the sight of the dirty-faced child in the oversized hoodie.

Behind the glass display, the head baker — a tall man with flour-dusted sleeves and kind eyes — stopped arranging pastries. He wiped his hands slowly on his apron.

The boy didn't speak. He just held his sister tighter as her wails grew louder. Tears streaked clean lines down his grimy cheeks. His bare feet shifted on the cool tile floor.

The baker stepped around the counter. No words at first. He simply knelt down to their level, his broad shoulders blocking some of the bright lights.

He reached into the case and pulled out a still-warm pain au chocolat. The steam rose gently between them. He offered it with both hands, like a gift.

The boy's eyes darted from the pastry to the baker's face. Hesitation. Hunger. Fear. His sister grabbed at the air, still sobbing.

Other customers began to notice. Whispers spread. Someone pulled out a phone. The luxury bakery, usually filled with quiet elegance, now held its breath.

The baker broke off a small piece and held it near the baby's mouth. Her cries softened into whimpers as she tasted the sweet chocolate.

A single tear slipped from the boy's eye. He finally took the pastry, biting into it so fast crumbs fell onto his sister's blanket.

More pastries appeared. A bottle of warm milk. A quiet corner chair pulled out just for them. The baker moved with calm purpose, as if this was the most important order of the day.

Outside, rain began to patter against the large windows. Inside, the glow felt warmer than ever.

But as the boy ate, his eyes kept flicking toward the door. Something unspoken lingered in his gaze — a story not yet told, a reason they had wandered in here today.

The baker sat nearby, watching quietly. He didn't ask questions. Not yet.

The baby quieted completely, nestling against her brother with chocolate on her chin.

Yet the boy still glanced at the entrance every few seconds, as if waiting for someone... or fearing someone might appear.
